“So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and fasting. ” — Daniel 9:3
Fasting can be an intimidating spiritual discipline. Some people have no idea how to fast, so they simply don’t do it. And then some people may think they’re fasting every day because they skip breakfast. Either way, fasting is often misunderstood.
Fasting is simply giving up food or other things for a period of time for a spiritual purpose. God is not as concerned with what we fast from as much as our heart behind it. If it’s a sacrifice to you, then that’s what matters to him. Fasting is a powerful tool because it pushes down the physical and emotional desires of our human nature in order for our spirit to grow stronger. Fasting helps weaken the grip of these things on our life, freeing us to focus entirely on the strengthening of our spirit. When we fast, we can tune into God and become sensitive to the Holy Spirit. The Bible encourages us to fast for miracles and supernatural breakthrough. We can fast to see bondages broken in our lives, like addictions and bad habits. It opens us up to receive healing and restoration from God, while also preparing us for new seasons ahead.
Fasting can be one of the most powerful spiritual catalysts. It’s not easy and requires discipline, but the rewards can be life- changing. Do you need breakthrough in an area of your life? Maybe it’s time for your physical body to go hungry so that your spirit can hunger for more of God.
Fasting subdues our fleshly desires so that our spirits can grow stronger.
